I grew up in Johannesburg in the 1980s and '90s — an only child shaped by the chaotic, hopeful, uncertain energy of a country reinventing itself. Oros in lunchboxes, Bata Toughees, cartoons on SABC, and the quiet collective hope of a new flag and a new anthem. It was a vibrant time, full of contradiction.
From as far back as I can recall, I've struggled to maintain focus. I'm forgetful, impulsive, and deeply sensitive — though I learned early to hide that last part. In my late teens and early twenties, things unravelled for a while. Broken relationships, wild choices, and a few years of feeling utterly untethered.
By 29, I found out I was pregnant — and made the decision to become a solo mother. What I didn't realise then was that in choosing survival, I had unknowingly entered full survival mode. My nervous system was running on adrenaline and cortisol. I was hyper-vigilant, reactive, exhausted — and completely convinced I was fine.
A few years later I met Dan, and we welcomed our daughter. Life was beautiful, but something still felt off. The exhaustion had compounded. Anxiety had moved in quietly. My creativity and relationships were beginning to suffer. My body stayed "on alert" even when there was nothing to fear.
Survival mode isn't weakness — it's an ancient biological response to real threat. But when the brain can't distinguish between a predator and a packed schedule, it keeps you locked in that state long after the danger has passed. Trauma, chronic stress, emotional overload — all of it can keep you there.
The thing that finally shifted it? Horses.
In August 2025, Stella and O'Malley arrived. And from the moment they walked in, something changed. They mirrored everything — our energy, our body language, our tension, our joy. There were laughs and there were tears. And in those moments of pure, unfiltered reflection, I felt something I hadn't felt in years: myself.
That's why Cosmic Calm exists. Because what I found in that paddock — I know others are looking for it too.
